This sequence was my biggest personal contribution to the film. Started off around the time JK (Jeffery Katzenberg) decided to give the movie an overhaul and brought in Aibel and Berger, the writers of Panda 1, to re-work the script. He also decided to "go back to the old days" with the story department. They designated the biggest meeting room on the floor as our story room, we drew our thumbnails there as a group, hung our boards on the walls, did good ol' fashioned paper pitches to JK and the gang and shot each other with nerf guns for hours on end. It was one of the highlights of my career thus far.
Pitching the sequence to Jeffrey Katzenberg and producer Melissa Cobb |
I was charged with boarding a sequence where Po bonds with his biological dad, Li, for the first time. The pages were very lose at this section, and I ended up writing a lot of it for the final version.
After an ideation session with directors, I started drawing and pinning thumbnails very quickly and pitched it constantly to the story team. The sequence was shaping up as a cheesy bonding montage with 80's music (or the KFP equivalent)... with very dangerous weaponry. Great ideas came from the team, and Derek Drymond did a comedy pass on the whole thing with a couple of hillarious gags that made it through the final version.
Took about a week in thumbnails and another two or three for final boards.
